SHCF

As part of my MA I am involved with Sheffield Hallam Curators Forum (SHCF). Our first event was held at the Site Gallery, Sheffield, introducing our curatorial team and our concept for exhibition. We worked with Russian Formalist Viktor Shklovsky’s notion of ‘defamiliarization’ with his 1917 essay ‘Art as Technique’ raising the question of whether this is still relevant today within contemporary art practice. My fellow curators and colleagues were Diana Ali, Cameron Craig and Xin-Shu Li.

We had a number of exhibitions that realised our intentions as follows:

Tuesday 12th February 2008
'Freedonia'
Site Gallery,
1 Brown Street,
Sheffield.

Monday 14th April 2008
One Night Stands #1
The Gallery,
Wimbledon College of Art,
London.

Three teams of curators, three provocations , one space.

The Gallery at Wimbledon College of Art is pleased to present ‘One Night Stands #1’. A series of three one night events hosted by the MA Critical Writing & Curatorial Practice students of Chelsea College of Art and Design in collaboration with the curating students of Essex and Sheffield Hallam Universities.

The three curatorial groups will take turns to deliver a provocation to one another and respond to a given stimulus. The first event will feature a group show curated by the MA Contemporary Fine Art: Curating students of Sheffield Hallam University exploring the theme of ‘defamiliarization’ in response to Viktor Shklovsky’s 1917 text ‘Art as Technique’. The provocation given to them was to take into account the nature of time-specificity.

Organized by:
MA Critical Writing & Curatorial Practice, Chelsea College of Art & Design.

Tuesday 6th - Friday 9th May 2008
'defamiliarization'
The End Gallery,
Sheffield Hallam University,
Psalter Lane,
Sheffield.
