Biography

Born 1978, Liverpool, UK.

Lives in Liverpool, UK.

I am a professional artist, educator and curator and whilst I try to be the best at what I do still enjoy working within the arts and education sectors as I feel this is benefitial to my own artistic practice.

The life of an artist and young professional is a challenging one especially in these hard economic times we face. I am a people person, a social person and I feel that in modern times this is something that we lack. A sense of belonging and a sense of community is what needs to happen. This quote sums  it up for me the here and now:

"Life is no brief candle for me. It is a sort of splendid torch which i have got to hold of for the moment, and i want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations." George Bernard Shaw

ARTIST STATEMENT

My artistic practice focuses on photography and new media.

I completed my BA (Hons) Fine Art degree at Sheffield Hallam University in 2001, PGCE Secondary/Post 16 Art and Design at Liverpool John Moores University in 2003 and more recent MA Contemporary Fine Art (Curation) at Sheffield Hallam University in 2009.

I am actively seeking further opportunities for my own arts practice and as a curator for future exhibitions.

I worked as a Secondary Art and Design teacher / Lecturer in Art and Design for several years and always cultivated ideas with the students I taught. My interest in photography and new media continues to grow and I feel that the MA has helped me in revisiting and rediscovering my own creative practice. I love to meet new people and see this as the basis for all my work, whether this be as a performative piece such as my video work or as a way of initiating a conversation between strangers. I believe that the photographer and the sitter have to feel at ease with one another in order for there to be a visual response. I have developed this understanding through club photography and working with many bands.

I have been commissioned by Liverpool Biennial to work on projects with students and community groups. These projects have been 'Lighten Up, STAR*, Gossip and At A Glance’.

Permanent paintings are held at Holly Lodge Girls College and West Derby School, Liverpool and photographs purchased by Liverpool Housing Action Trust and photography at The Cotgrave Candleby Lane School, Cotgrave, Nottinghamshire.
